Incorporating interactive elements into your web site... For more sophisticated applications, interactive databases and / or spreadsheets can be incorporated into your new web site. For example, you may wish to include an on-line catalogue which can be queried so that site visitors can "browse" your products. Or you could have a database of your society's registered members and site visitors could search for members in their locality. The potential applications are endless. We can also include a new technology from Microsoft which allows Excel spreadsheets to be published on the Internet. An example of this is below:
If you can only see a grey box above, then you need to install Microsoft Office 2000 Web Components. The interactive Excel spreadsheet above will only function if your PC has Microsoft Office 2000 installed. If the spreadsheet above has displayed correctly then you can go ahead and type in anything you like. It is a real Excel spreadsheet which is completely interactive and even contains formulas which instantly update the spreadsheet results. Go ahead, give it a whirl... The spreadsheet can be designed in any way you like and cell ranges can be protected so that site visitors can only modify certain areas such as "qty". The applications for an on-line interactive spreadsheet are as limitless as the applications for Excel itself. Unfortunately there is currently less than total support for interactive spreadsheets on the Internet. Microsoft have chosen to limit support to users who have Office 2000 installed on their PC's. However, Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer ARE the world's most popular software applications and within a year or so, most users will have upgraded to Office 2000. Thankfully, the standard installation of Office 2000 includes the installation of Office Web Components by default. |
